Le
Petit Couchon, Bath
This
review should already have been written by now, it’s a while since
we were at this restaurant. It does, however, stick in my mind as a memorable
occasion. It might have been the company (Me and the kids, my mum and
dad, my sister Laura, brother-in-law Steve, my brother Wouter with girlfriend
Lisa) or it might have been the excellent food, good service and cosy
atmosphere!
May be not a good choice of restaurant if you have kids with you. The
menu isn’t child-friendly and it’s not very practical, i.e.
no highchairs. They don’t advertise this place as being child-friendly,
so I won’t criticise them for that! With our two beautifully behaved
kids we went in anyway.
As you come in, there is the main seating area, then a small slightly
out-of-the-way area behind the counter. We were a large group and so it
was quite understandable and practical reasoning to sit us there. It was
shame because you did feel totally excluded and almost missed the experience
of sitting in an authentic French place, which is what the restaurant
is trying to sell. There was a large menu board on the wall and when we
realised it was the only menu, no cards or anything, it was clumsy to
all have to go and have a look to see and decide what we wanted.
The
waiter took our orders; my order being a shared ‘leg of beef’
with mum, dad and the kids, and some fries. We had to wait quite a bit
but, even though slightly excluded, the wall was decorated with some lovely
pictures of pigs, which kept at least the kids entertained! Before our
food was served on plates, the chef came out and showed us the whole piece
of beef. I must admit it looked mouth-watering, and I was impressed the
chef came in to show us. It told me he had pride in his cooking and rightly
so I found out!
On
a wooden plate, the beef was cut up in medium slices, decorated with thyme,
garlic, cherry tomatoes and green leaf salad. It was a picture! It was
cooked medium, so there was quite a lot of red. It slightly worried me
but when I tasted it I forgot those worries. It was really soft, tender
and absolutely delicious. I filled my plate with all the different bits
(apart from the garlic!) and it was a wonderful blend of flavours with
meat that melted on my tongue. It may sound like an exaggeration but I
have never tasted beef this lovely before.
Even though there was no kids menu, the children loved this really good
food. The waiter got slightly stroppy at all our requests but other than
that, the service was great too!
I would definitely go again if I had a chance. May be a romantic dinner
for two as opposed to a whole family meal though, I might be able to experience
more of that French atmosphere they are so proud of!
